⚠️ Educational estimate only, not financial advice. Assumes a fixed withdrawal rate and constant savings rate all the way to each target. Real markets are messier — sequence of returns risk, lifestyle creep, and career changes all matter. Nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere — the calculation runs entirely in your browser.

How this calculator works

Both targets use the same formula: target = annual spend / withdrawal rate. Regular FIRE uses your current expenses. Fat FIRE multiplies that by your lifestyle multiplier — the same math, just a bigger number to reach.

Growth uses your real return — nominal return adjusted for inflation — so results are shown in today's purchasing power. Your portfolio grows along one single path (same savings rate the whole way); the chart shows that one path crossing two different target lines at two different points in time. The gap between those crossings is the entire cost of going Fat instead of Regular.

What is Fat FIRE?
Fat FIRE is financial independence at a comfortably above-average, upgraded standard of living — business class flights, no grocery budget, generous gifting — rather than the frugal-by-necessity lifestyle sometimes associated with early retirement. It requires a larger portfolio than Regular or Lean FIRE, and typically several more years of saving to reach.
How much do I need for Fat FIRE?
It depends entirely on how much you plan to spend. Many people target $150,000–$250,000/year in retirement for a Fat FIRE lifestyle. At a 3.5% withdrawal rate, $200,000/year requires a portfolio of roughly $5.7 million — far more than the $1.1–1.4 million typically cited for Regular FIRE.
Is Fat FIRE worth the extra years?
That is a personal call this calculator cannot make for you — but it can show you the real trade-off in years, which is often more or less extreme than people assume. Some find the extra decade not worth delaying freedom for; others decide the upgraded lifestyle is exactly the point of retiring at all.
