Money trouble right now? Real help exists — free.

What's closest to your situation right now?
⏰
I need money for something urgent — today or this week
Rent, food, a bill that's about to cut off a service
📄
I'm behind on debts and don't know how to manage it
Credit cards, loans, a debt collector contacting you
🔌
I need to buy something essential but can't afford it
Fridge, car repair, medical costs
😔
I just feel overwhelmed and don't know where to start
That's completely normal — let's find you a starting point
⏰
Same-week help is available
These services can move fast. Start with whichever fits — you can call more than one.
💬
National Debt Helpline
Free financial counsellors can help you work out what to prioritise this week and negotiate with whoever you owe money to — energy company, landlord, bank.
If you're already on a Centrelink payment and can't wait until your next scheduled payment for something essential, you may be able to get an early payment. Ask about a Crisis Payment too if your situation is extreme (family violence, disaster, release from prison).
Your energy/water/telco provider's hardship program
By law, every essential service provider in Australia must have a hardship program — payment plans, bill relief, and a promise not to disconnect you while you're in it. Call the number on your bill and ask specifically for "hardship."
📄
You don't have to sort this out alone
Financial counsellors are free, confidential, and not affiliated with any bank or lender — their only job is to work in your interest.
💬
National Debt Helpline
This is the front door for debt of any kind — credit cards, personal loans, buy-now-pay-later, a debt collector's letter, even bankruptcy questions. They can negotiate with creditors on your behalf and explain your rights.
If your debt situation is connected to family or domestic violence — coerced debt, financial control — this specialist line can connect you to services that understand that context.
💡 A financial counsellor never charges a fee and never sells you anything. If anyone asks you to pay for "debt help" or "credit repair," that's a red flag — the free service does the same job.
🔌
No-interest loans exist for exactly this
This is a genuinely good, government-backed option most people don't know exists.
🏦
No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS)
Borrow up to $2,000–$3,000 for essentials — fridge, washing machine, car repair, medical or dental costs — with genuinely zero interest and zero fees. No credit check. Backed by the Australian Government and the National Australia Bank, delivered through 650+ community organisations. If eligible you'll typically need to earn under ~$70,000 (single) or ~$100,000 (family) before tax.
Before you consider a payday loan or "buy now, pay later"
These often come with high fees or interest that compound the problem. NILS exists specifically to be the safer alternative — it's worth the extra day or two it takes to apply.
😔
That feeling is more common than you'd think
You don't need to have it figured out before you ask for help. That's literally what these services are for.
💬
Start with the National Debt Helpline — even if you're not sure it's "debt"
Financial counsellors deal with every kind of money trouble, not just debt. They'll listen, help you make sense of it, and point you toward whatever's actually needed — even if that's a different service entirely.
Financial stress and mental health are deeply connected
Feeling constantly anxious, unable to sleep, or like you can't switch your mind off from money worries is a real and common response — not a personal failing. If that sounds familiar, Helplines.com.au has free, private, clinically-validated tools (like a 2-minute stress check) and a directory of Australian support lines — completely separate from anything financial, just there for how you're feeling.
⚠️ This page lists free, verified Australian services current as of 2026. Phone numbers and eligibility rules can change — if a number doesn't connect, try the website link or call 1800 007 007 for a warm handoff. Nothing on this page is financial, legal, or medical advice; it's a directory to help you find people who can give you that advice for free. If you are in immediate danger, always call 000.
