Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you might want to ask.

How the calculators work, where our numbers come from, embedding on your site, partnering with us, and privacy.

🎯General
Is MyDailyCost really free? Where's the catch?
Yes, 100% free — no signup, no accounts, no premium tier, no email walls. The catch: we make no money right now. It's a passion project. Eventually we may accept a small number of Featured Partner sponsorships (free ones for now — see partners) to help cover hosting costs. Nothing else.
Are these calculators accurate?
The maths is correct — we validate every calculation in Python before shipping. But calculators can only work with the numbers you give them and simplified assumptions. Real-world outcomes depend on your specific lender, tax situation, credit history, and countless other factors. Every flagship tool now has a Sources & citations section explaining exactly which official sources we use.
Is this financial advice?
No. Our calculators are educational — they help you explore scenarios and understand how numbers move. They can't replace personalised advice from a licensed financial advisor, mortgage broker, or accountant who knows your situation. See a professional before making major financial decisions.
Which countries do these calculators work for?
Many of our tools (compound interest, savings goals, budgets, FIRE calculators, DCA) work equally well anywhere in the world — just switch the currency selector at the top. Tools that involve tax now include country selectors (AU / US / UK / CA / NZ / custom) with editable defaults so you can adapt them to your region. Country-specific tools (AU super, LMI, stamp duty, BAS, HECS) will always work best for Australian users but usually have close equivalents elsewhere — we're steadily generalising them.
📚Data & sources
Where do the tax brackets come from?
Directly from the Australian Taxation Office. We use the current-year resident tax rates including Medicare Levy. When brackets change (usually 1 July), we update within a few days.
What's the source of your APRA buffer and HEM figures?
APRA's 3% serviceability buffer comes from APG 223. HEM benchmarks are from the Melbourne Institute HEM Index. Different lenders have their own internal HEM tables — our estimates are indicative middle-ground values.
Are you a tax authority or advisor?
No — MyDailyCost is an educational calculator site. We deliberately don't give tax advice, don't interpret rulings, and don't track legislative changes in real time. Our tax tools have configurable rates and country selectors so you can plug in the current numbers from your local tax authority or agent. Tax rules change every year — always verify with someone qualified before acting on any calculation.
How current are your interest rate assumptions?
We check RBA rate statistics and major bank rate pages monthly. The 2026 defaults reflect current market conditions but you should always enter your specific rate for accurate results.
Where can I look up the terms you use?
See our comprehensive Financial Glossary — over 90 plain-English definitions covering FIRE, mortgages, tax, super, and investing terms, all linked to the relevant calculators.
🧩Embed / widgets
Can I embed these calculators on my website?
Yes! Visit our widget generator to pick a calculator, choose dark or light theme, add your branding (optional), and copy the iframe code. Paste it anywhere. No signup, no cost, and it auto-resizes to fit content.
How do I add my own branding to an embed?
In the widget generator, fill in your business name, tagline, CTA button, URL, and optionally your AFSL/credit licence badge and accent colour. Your branding appears as a "Featured Partner" block inside the embedded calculator. Free — no approval or signup needed.
Does the embed work on WordPress / Squarespace / Wix / Webflow?
Yes — anywhere that lets you paste an HTML/iframe block. WordPress: Custom HTML block. Squarespace: Code block. Wix: HTML embed element. Webflow: Embed component. If your platform doesn't let you paste raw HTML, look for a "custom code" or "third-party embed" option.
Is there a light theme for embedding on non-dark websites?
Yes. Add &theme=light to the iframe URL, or select the "☀️ Light" theme in the widget generator. Everything switches to a clean white-and-emerald palette that fits standard business websites.
Do the embeds phone home / track my visitors?
The embedded calculator loads from mydailycost.com, so basic Google Analytics stats are recorded (page views, referrer, country). No personal data is collected, no cookies are placed, no calculator inputs are ever transmitted back. If you want zero tracking, you can copy our source code — everything is client-side JavaScript.
🤝Partnerships
How does the free partnership program work?
Featured Partners get their logo, tagline, and CTA button displayed on relevant category tools (e.g. mortgage brokers appear on 10+ mortgage-related pages). One Featured Partner per category — first genuine applicant wins. All free. See partners.
Is there approval / credit licence checking?
Yes for Featured Partners. We verify credit licences (AFSL / ACL / etc.) and check that the business genuinely serves customers before activating the slot. Self-serve embeds don't require any approval — anyone can white-label calculators for their own site.
What happens if you introduce paid tiers later?
Existing free partners are grandfathered for at least 12 months. You lose nothing by joining now, and you gain the goodwill of being an early supporter.
🔒Privacy
What data do you collect?
Only basic Google Analytics (page views, referrer, general location, device type). No calculator inputs are ever sent to a server — all maths runs in your browser. No login means no personal data to leak.
Are calculator inputs sent to a server?
Never. Every calculator on the site runs entirely in your browser (client-side JavaScript). Your salary, savings, debt, and other inputs never leave your device. You can verify this by opening browser developer tools and watching the network tab.
Do you use cookies?
Only what's needed. Google Analytics uses first-party cookies for basic session tracking. Some tools use localStorage to remember your preferences (e.g. journey stage on home hub, "My Details" profile). No third-party tracking cookies, no advertising cookies.
