Frequently asked questions
What is the NPPA ceiling price?
The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) sets a legal maximum retail price for essential medicines under the Drug Price Control Order (DPCO). No pharmacy can legally charge more than this ceiling price for that formulation. It's a government-enforced cap, not a market average — generic versions are commonly sold at or near this price.
Why would my medicine cost more than shown here?
This estimate uses the generic formulation's ceiling price. Branded versions of the same molecule are frequently sold well above the ceiling price. Switching to the generic (often available from a Jan Aushadhi Kendra) is usually the single biggest way to cut this cost.
Does this include doctor visits?
No. This tool deliberately covers only the ongoing, repeating cost of medicine and routine lab monitoring — not consultation fees, which vary enormously by doctor, city, and specialty and aren't government-regulated the way medicine and lab prices are.
Is this the total cost of my condition?
No — this is a simplified single-medicine estimate for the most common first-line treatment at a typical dose. Many people take combination therapy, additional medicines, or need more frequent monitoring. Treat this as a conservative starting benchmark, not a diagnosis-specific bill.
