// how it works
1
Scroll to the footer of any page
The Life-Hours toggle is in the footer. It looks like a small switch labelled "⏱ Life-Hours mode". It is on every single page of this site.
2
Flip the switch and enter your rate
You will be prompted for your real take-home hourly rate. Enter the number once — it is saved automatically and works across every tool on the site from that point on.
3
Every dollar figure gains a time equivalent
Result values across the site will show a small annotation beneath them: = 2,400 hours of life or = 4.2 work weeks. The dollar value stays — you just see both.
4
Click the rate to change it anytime
The rate shows as @ $50/hr ✏ next to the toggle. Click it to update your rate. All figures recalculate instantly.
What is my real take-home hourly rate?

Most people think in salary. But salary is not what you actually keep — and it does not account for how many hours you actually give. Your real rate is the honest number.

Real hourly rate = Annual take-home pay ÷ hours worked per year
Hours worked per year = Weekly hours × weeks worked
Example: $90,000 take-home pay. 46 hours/week. 48 working weeks.
= $90,000 ÷ (46 × 48) = $90,000 ÷ 2,208 = $40.76/hr real rate

Notice it is lower than it feels. That is the point.

// questions
Where does the toggle appear? +

In the footer of every page on this site. Scroll to the very bottom — you will see "⏱ Life-Hours mode" with a toggle switch. It is the same toggle on all 160+ tools. Turn it on once and it stays on as you navigate.

Does it work on all tools? +

It works on result values that contain a dollar amount — things like "FIRE number: $1.2M", "Total interest: $480k", "30-year opportunity cost: $340k". It looks for those figures and adds the time equivalent beneath them. Some animated or canvas-based figures may not convert.

Can I change my rate later? +

Yes. Once the toggle is on, your rate shows as "@ $50/hr ✏" next to the switch. Click it and a prompt appears to update the number. All displayed figures recalculate immediately.

Is my rate stored anywhere? +

It is stored in your browser's local storage only — on your device, never sent to any server. This site collects no personal data. If you clear your browser cache or use a different browser, you will need to enter it again.

Why does it show "work weeks" instead of hours for big numbers? +

Because "6,240 hours of life" is hard to feel. "3.1 work years" lands differently. The display automatically scales: under 1 hour it shows minutes, under 24 hours it shows hours, under 168 hours it shows work days, beyond that it shows work weeks. The goal is always the most visceral version of the number.
