What is stamp duty on a car in Australia?
Stamp duty on vehicles varies by state and vehicle value. This calculator uses a flat 4% estimate which is close to the weighted average across most Australian states for private passenger vehicles. Some states (ACT, SA) offer stamp duty exemptions or concessions on EVs — enter 0% for those.
Why might the hybrid win over 5 years?
EVs typically cost $15–30k more upfront. At 15,000km/yr, fuel savings are real but take time to accumulate. The hybrid has a lower purchase price AND excellent fuel economy — often making it the best 5-year option. Over 10+ years the EV often wins due to compounding fuel savings and lower servicing costs.
What about the FBT exemption for EVs?
If your employer offers salary packaging or a novated lease, eligible EVs under the LCT threshold (~$89,332 for fuel-efficient vehicles in 2024-25) are exempt from Fringe Benefits Tax. This can save $5,000–15,000+ depending on your income. Factor this into the EV rebate field as an extra benefit if applicable.
Does this include depreciation?
Yes — the residual value shown is estimated using typical depreciation curves (EV: 18% yr1, 15% yr2–3, 12% yr4–5; Hybrid: 15% yr1, 12–13% thereafter; Petrol: 18% yr1, 14–15% thereafter). The net cost subtracts this residual, giving you true economic cost not just cash spent.
